With spring being almost here, it is time again to enjoy walking around Vienna and discovering/re-discovering its most beautifull buildings. The City Hall is one of the most impressive monumental buildings in Vienna. It was designed by Friedrich Schmidt and erected between 1872 and 1883. At that time, Emperor Francis Joseph made it a condition that the building should not be higher that the 99 metre of the Votiv Church. So Friedrich Schmidt used a trick: the tower itself is only 97,9 meters high, but with the Rathausmann placed on top, the building is 104,3 meters high. The building is definetely worth visiting.... https://www.wien.gv.at/english/cityhall/tours.htm   

​Are you getting ready for Christmas yet?  We hope you have been able to visit some of Vienna’s famous Christmas markets.Don’t forget to do your shopping in time… the upcoming holiday season is full of bank holidays, where all shops are closed. Since this year Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are Sundays- shops will be closed for longer than usually. Christmas Eve (Heiliger Abend):24th of December: In general this is not a bank holiday but people usually finish work early and shops close by 2pm in order to be able to prepare the evening.  The Christ child (Christkind) secretly decorates the Christ­mas tree and brings presents. The presents are opened on the same evening.Christmas Day (Christtag): 25th of December: Official bank holiday. Traditionally, the day is spent with the family.St. Stephen's Day (Stefanietag). 26th of December. Official bank hoilday. Also this day is usually spent with the family.New Year's Eve (Silvester) 31st of December: This is not a bank holiday. Have a walk through the 1st district, which is very popular.  Shops usually close at 3pm. Fireworks are traditional. At mid-night the bells of Stephen cathedral ring. It is customary to give relatives and friends good-luck charms for the New Year, such as marzipan pigs, clovers, chimney sweeps and mushrooms.New Year's Day (Neujahr) 1st of January: Official bank hoilday. The traditional Vienna Philharmonic Concert, featuring the music of Strauss, is broadcast via television to more than 40 countries in the world. On ORF (Austrian channel) you can watch the concert around 11.00 a.m. Stores are closed.Epiphany (Heilige Drei Könige) 6th of January: Official bank hoilday. Young people dressed as the Three Wise Men with a star bearer go from house to house to bring good tidings and news of Christ's birth. They collect monetary donations for underdeveloped countries (but appreciate a small gift of cookies or chocolate). Usually they'll write C(aspar), B(althasar), M(elchior) and the year in chalk over the entrance of Roman Catholic homes. Finally Austria got rid of the contract fee "Vertragsvergebührung".Since November 11th, 2017 tenants don't need to pay anymore the contract tax of 1% of 36 monthly rents when signing a rental contract

The first snow is supposed to hit Vienna this week. Have you already put on wintertires on your vehicle? Between November 1st and April 15th, passenger cars and trucks with a maximum weight of up to 3500kg may be operated in winter conditions such as snow -covered tracks, snowy slush or ice only if winter tires have been installed on all wheels.The obligation to use winter tires however only applies in winter conditions and only if the vehicle is operated in these conditions.Please keep in mind that according to law, only tires which bear the following letters are accepted as winter tires: "M+S", "M.S" or "M&S".
